wanting a ferret
Hi all
first great site full of good information
i am wanting a ferret(s) for me and my children, and so i have a few questions
I
have kept hamsters and rats, and i am wanting something a bit bigger. I
also have a cat. I wanted to know how a ferret would act with a cat, my
cat was interested in the hamsters and rats but never hurt them or
touched them just sat and watched.
I still have my old rat cage
which is very large stands about a meter high and two foot across and a
foot deep (rough guess) which im planning on using. i live in a
massonette
I also cant travell farand i dont drive and i dont want a 'pet shop' ferret so would rescue ferret(s) be good for a first one.

Re: wanting a ferret
rescue is always the best idea. that way you get chance to handle the ferret and get all the info you might need from someone that hopefully knows what they are talking about.. and tell me if im wrong folks but two ferrets are better than one..god knows how i would find the time or energy needed to entertain one ferret, the best playmate is normally another ferret..regarding the cage, depends how much time you expect them to stay in it. ive kept rats for many years in large cages but i couldnt imagine my two ferrets being happy in one, they are much larger and more lively than any rat ive ever owned. im sure others have got plenty of good advice for you.good luck with whatever you decide.

Welcome to the forum Gemmalou.
Couldn`t have put it better myself!!
If the RSPCA want to do a home check they may not approve of your cage. I hope they do as if the ferrets are going to be free to roam your home there shouldn`t be a problem but it`s them you have to subdue.
Don`t forget, if they do say no, go else where. There`s hundreds of ferrets out there waiting for a loving home.

re wanting a ferret
Hi Gemmalou and welcome to the forum.
I have to agree with all Basil says (this pains me) I love him really
Dont give up if the rspca say no, and have you thought of no cage?
I have Mama Jill who is a little old lady living in a draw, a hamock and an igloo she likes lots of choice, she is in our back bed room with freedom of the house.
You do need to always remember outside doors must stay closed or close her bedroom door and dont ever leave the toilet lid up stuff like that, but it does work if at all time you think ferret
I also have Millie who lives in a really big cage with three floors, she lives in the same bedroom as Mama Jill but they dont really get on so Millie has her large cage.
I can hear Basil telling me shut up so I will go now and leave you think

Cherry baby, you keep a ferret in your drawers??
I suppose if there is only Mr and Mrs Cherry at home then the general atmosphere is quieter and a ferret on the loose wouldn`t cause any problems but a home which has young children running around may pose a few dangers to a loose ferret. ie. being stood on. Children don`t alway think doors and toilet seats.
Sorry if it sounds like i disagree with the idea, i think it`s a great one in the right curcumstances.
Now i`m in for the soap box treatment.

Unable to give soapbox treatment as I fell of the bugger laughing at me keeping a ferret in mi drawers.
Basil your ace.
And as much as I hate to admit it, your right.
Boy that hurts, I might have to lie down now in a dark room to recover.

Gemmalou.
Put this photo of Cherry on your mantlepiece, it`ll keep your children away from the fire.
